7BR is a multi-disciplinary set with expertise and extensive experience over decades in public inquiry and related work. Members have chaired inquiries and acted both as counsel to inquiries and for core participants in a number of complex, high-profile inquiries.

Members of 7BR have been instructed in the major public inquiries of recent years, including the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, the Undercover Policing Inquiry, and the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse: an extensive inquiry which investigated institutional failures to protect children from sexual abuse, publishing nineteen reports on fifteen investigations.

Rachel Langdale KC was lead counsel to the Inquiry in its investigation into children in the care of the London Borough of Lambeth.  Members have also previously been instructed in the Mid-Staffordshire Inquiry, the Baha Mousa Inquiry, the Al-Sweady Inquiry, and the Bloody Sunday Inquiry.

Most recently, our members have been instructed as counsel to the inquiry and on behalf of core participants in the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, which will consider and report on preparations and the response to the pandemic in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Members have also been instructed in the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s inquiries into disabled access at Premier League football clubs, and the making of reasonable adjustments for defendants and people with cognitive impairments, mental health conditions and neuro-diverse conditions in the criminal justice system.

Members are able to draw on their expertise across a number of complementary practice areas and work tirelessly to ensure that their clients’ interests are protected and their voices heard, whether individual or corporate entities.

Members have been involved in all aspects of public inquiries, including the provision of advice to public authorities, extensive drafting and provision of statements, interviewing witnesses; drafting written and oral submissions; and oral advocacy within the context of the Inquiries Act 2005.

We are familiar with the unique and consuming challenges Inquiry work can bring and several members currently hold SC or DV clearance and can be instructed in highly sensitive matters.
